Best Places to Visit in Kenya for a Weekend Getaway: Destinations and Costs
From Naivasha to Nanyuki, here are Kenya's best weekend getaways with realistic budgets, drive times and where to stay.

Kenya is built for the weekend escape. Most of the country's best destinations sit within a two-to-four-hour drive or a short flight from Nairobi, and the rise of self-catering cottages, tented camps and budget Airbnbs means you do not need a lodge budget to get away. Here are the weekend getaways Kenyans actually book, with honest cost estimates.
Naivasha: the default weekend escape
About 90 km from Nairobi (roughly 1.5 to 2 hours via the Nairobi–Nakuru highway), Naivasha is the country's most popular weekend destination for a reason. Hell's Gate National Park offers cycling among zebra and giraffe, Lake Naivasha has boat rides to see hippos and fish eagles, and Crescent Island is a gentle walking safari.
Budget estimate: self-catering cottages and Airbnb stays run from about KSh 5,000–15,000 per night for a group; camping from around KSh 1,500 per person. Hell's Gate entry is modest for citizens and residents — check current rates on the KWS website, as fees change. Fuel from Nairobi is roughly KSh 3,000–4,000 return for a small car.
Nanyuki and the Mount Kenya foothills
Three hours north on the A2, Nanyuki is the gateway to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Mount Kenya and a string of riverside cottages. Ol Pejeta is home to the last two northern white rhinos and offers excellent game drives. If you are feeling ambitious, our Mount Kenya hiking guide covers routes and costs for a longer trip.
Budget estimate: cottages from around KSh 8,000 per night; Ol Pejeta day entry is charged per person — confirm current conservancy fees before you go.
Amboseli: elephants with a Kilimanjaro backdrop
About four hours from Nairobi, Amboseli is doable as a long weekend and delivers some of the best elephant viewing in Africa. See our full Amboseli safari guide for fees and accommodation. Budget campsites exist inside and outside the park; mid-range lodges typically start around KSh 15,000–25,000 per person per night on full board.
The coast by air or SGR
Diani, Watamu and Malindi are genuine weekend options thanks to frequent flights from Wilson Airport and the Madaraka Express to Mombasa. Return flights to Diani (Ukunda) often start around KSh 10,000–18,000 if booked early; the SGR economy class is far cheaper. Our beach holidays guide compares the coast towns in detail.
Quick comparison
| Destination | Drive/flight from Nairobi | Typical stay (per night) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Naivasha | 1.5–2 hrs drive | KSh 5,000–15,000 | Groups, first-timers |
| Nanyuki | 3 hrs drive | KSh 8,000–20,000 | Scenery, conservancies |
| Amboseli | 4 hrs drive | KSh 15,000+ | Elephants, photography |
| Diani | 1 hr flight / SGR + transfer | KSh 6,000–25,000 | Beach lovers |
Tips to keep costs down
- Travel as a group and book self-catering — splitting a cottage is almost always cheaper than hotel rooms.
- Book park fees and accommodation early for holiday weekends; Naivasha and Diani sell out fast on long weekends.
- Carry your national ID or passport: citizen and resident park rates are dramatically lower than non-resident rates.
All prices are estimates and change frequently — confirm current park and conservancy fees on the official KWS or conservancy websites before travelling.
