Best Beach Holiday Destinations in Kenya: Diani, Watamu, Malindi and Lamu
Diani, Watamu, Malindi or Lamu? A honest comparison of Kenya's best beach destinations — vibe, prices, how to get there and who each suits.

Kenya's 500 km Indian Ocean coastline offers very different beach experiences. Choosing the right town matters more than choosing the right hotel. Here is the honest comparison.
Diani Beach
Kenya's most developed beach resort area, south of Mombasa. Long white-sand beach, every water sport, a real restaurant and nightlife scene, and accommodation from backpacker hostels to five-star resorts and private villas.
- Getting there: fly to Ukunda airstrip from Wilson (about 1 hour), or SGR to Mombasa then road transfer via the Likoni ferry or Dongo Kundu bypass.
- Costs: self-catering apartments from around KSh 6,000–15,000 per night; boutique hotels KSh 15,000–40,000.
- Best for: first-timers, families, anyone who wants beach plus restaurants and activities.
Watamu
A quieter village on the north coast wrapped around a marine national park. Superb snorkelling and diving on the reef, the ruined Gedi forest town nearby, and Mida Creek for sunset dhow trips. Italian influence means excellent food.
- Getting there: fly to Malindi airport (about 1.5 hours from Nairobi), then 30 minutes by road.
- Costs: cottages and small hotels from around KSh 7,000–20,000 per night.
- Best for: snorkellers, couples, repeat coast visitors.
Malindi
Watamu's bigger neighbour: more hotels, a proper town, deep-sea fishing heritage and a long beach. Slightly faded glamour, often better value than Diani.
- Best for: value seekers, fishing, combining with Watamu day trips.
Lamu
A UNESCO-listed Swahili town with no cars, where days revolve around dhow trips, rooftop sundowners and Shela beach. The most atmospheric and romantic option on the coast — see our couples' guide.
- Getting there: fly to Manda airstrip (about 1.5 hours from Nairobi), then a short boat ride.
- Costs: guesthouses from around KSh 5,000; boutique Swahili houses KSh 12,000–40,000.
- Best for: culture, romance, switching off completely.
Also consider
- Kilifi: creek-side town halfway to Watamu, popular with Nairobi weekenders and the sailing crowd.
- Tiwi and Msambweni: quieter beaches south of Diani.
- Kisite-Mpunguti (Wasini): day trip from Diani for dolphins and snorkelling.
When to go
The coast is warm year-round. The driest, sunniest months are roughly January–March and July–October; the long rains (April–June) bring downpours but also the lowest rates. December is peak season — book early, as our school holidays guide explains.
