Travelling with children changes the maths: you need space, flexible meal times, activities that work for different ages and accommodation that does not charge like a honeymoon suite. These destinations deliver.

Diani and the south coast

Calm, shallow water at low tide, sandcastle-grade beaches and resorts with kids' clubs make Diani the default family beach holiday. Self-catering apartments and villas from around KSh 8,000–20,000 per night work well for families; many resorts offer family rooms and children's menus. Add-ons kids love: glass-bottom boat rides, the Colobus Conservation centre and a day trip to Wasini. See the beach guide for comparisons.

Naivasha

Boat rides among hippos, cycling in Hell's Gate (no big predators, so children can ride safely), Crescent Island walks and horse riding — Naivasha packs more child-friendly activities into a small area than anywhere else near Nairobi. Cottages sleeping six to eight from around KSh 10,000–18,000 per night make it genuinely affordable for extended families.

Nanyuki and Mount Kenya region

The Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy's animal orphanage, horse riding, trout fishing and easy nature walks keep children busy, and Ol Pejeta's rhinos and chimps work as a gentle first safari. Family cottages from around KSh 8,000 per night.

Child-friendly safari: where works

  • Nairobi National Park — a half-day game drive with no long transfers; perfect first safari for young children. See our park guide.
  • Lake Nakuru — compact, fenced, and full of easily seen rhinos and giraffe; manageable drive times. Details in the Nakuru guide.
  • Amboseli — big elephant herds are reliable crowd-pleasers, but the drive is long; consider flying or breaking the journey.

Note that many lodges have minimum-age policies for game drives or charge child rates — always ask before booking.

Budget tips for families

  1. Self-cater. A cottage with a kitchen halves food costs and removes restaurant stress with toddlers.
  2. Use citizen park rates — children under a certain age often enter free or at reduced rates; carry birth certificates or IDs where applicable.
  3. Travel in a group. Two families sharing a large house split costs and share babysitting.
  4. Drive rather than fly for groups of four or more — the SGR to Mombasa is also far cheaper than flying a family.
