Kenya's school holidays — roughly April, August and November/December — are peak family travel season, which means the best-value places sell out early and prices spike. Here is how to plan each break.

April: the long rains break

April falls in the low season for most parks and the coast, which is good news for your wallet. Rain usually comes in afternoon bursts rather than all day.

  • Diani and the coast: lower rates, warm sea, occasional showers. Resorts discount heavily.
  • Naivasha: green and beautiful; Hell's Gate is fine between showers.
  • Amboseli: dramatic skies and Kilimanjaro views between clouds, plus low-season lodge rates.

August: migration season

August is the single busiest month in Kenyan tourism because it combines local school holidays with the wildebeest migration and European summer holidays.

  • Maasai Mara: the migration is at its peak, but so are prices and vehicle numbers. Book accommodation three to six months ahead. See the Mara guide.
  • Alternatives to the Mara crowds: Tsavo, Samburu and Meru are superb in August and far less crowded.
  • Nanyuki/Laikipia: dry-season wildlife viewing at Ol Pejeta without Mara-level crowds.

November–December: the festive rush

December is peak season everywhere — coast, parks and Naivasha alike. Short rains in November usually ease by mid-December.

  • The coast is the classic Christmas trip; book by September for decent rates and availability.
  • Lake Nakuru and Naivasha work well for shorter breaks when coast prices are prohibitive — see the Nakuru guide.
  • Camping is the budget escape valve for December — our camping guide lists sites, but book those early too.

Booking strategy for school holidays

  1. Book 2–4 months ahead for August and December; April can be booked closer to the date.
  2. Self-catering houses absorb big families better than hotels and sell out first — book them earliest.
  3. Midweek travel within the holiday window avoids weekend surcharges.
  4. Consider "second-tier" destinations — Watamu instead of Diani, Elementaita instead of Naivasha, Meru instead of the Mara — for the same holiday at lower cost and crowd levels.

For activity ideas by destination, see our family holidays guide.
