Marsabit County
Marsabit County spans a vast area of northern Kenya from forested volcanic highlands to the shores of Lake Turkana. Marsabit National Park protects crater lakes, elephants and montane forest around Mount Marsabit. To the north, the Chalbi Desert forms a stark salt plain bordered by oases and volcanic terrain. Lake Turkana and the Koobi Fora fossil sites reveal exceptional geological and human history, while communities including Borana, Gabra, Rendille and Turkana maintain diverse pastoral traditions. Long distances and rough roads make careful planning essential, but the county rewards adventurous travellers with some of Kenya’s most dramatic and remote landscapes.
