Mombasa County

Mombasa is a historic island city and major port on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast. Its Old Town has narrow lanes, carved doors and architecture shaped by centuries of Swahili, Arab, Asian and European trade. Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking the old harbour. Offshore, Mombasa Marine National Park protects coral reefs visited for snorkelling and diving. Nyali and Bamburi beaches stretch north of the island, while Likoni links travellers with the south coast. The city combines beach holidays, living Swahili culture, seafood and an important chapter of Kenyan history.
