SGR Madaraka Express

Kenya has a reputation for expensive safaris, but locals travel the country on surprisingly small budgets. Here is where to go and how to keep costs down.

Budget-friendly destinations

  • Naivasha: the king of budget getaways. Cheap group cottages, camping from around KSh 1,500 per person, affordable boat rides, and Hell's Gate is one of the cheapest parks to enter. Reachable by matatu via Nakuru-bound vehicles.
  • Nairobi National Park: a world-class game drive for the price of a day's park fee plus fuel — no lodge, no flights. See the park guide.
  • The coast by SGR: the Madaraka Express to Mombasa costs a fraction of flying. Stay in budget guesthouses in Mombasa, Tiwi or Diani's cheaper cottages — details in the beach guide.
  • Nanyuki and Mount Kenya foothills: budget bandas, campsites and cheap eats in a spectacular setting.
  • Kakamega Forest and western Kenya: rainforest walks, birding and very low accommodation costs, far off the tourist trail.
  • Iten and the Rift Valley highlands: the home of champions — cheap guesthouses, stunning escarpment views and hiking.

The big money-savers

  1. Citizen and resident rates: park fees for Kenyan citizens are a small fraction of tourist rates — always carry your ID. This is the single biggest saving available. See what fees look like in our safari cost guide.
  2. Camp: camping cuts accommodation costs by 80% or more.
  3. Travel in a group: a cottage for six is cheaper per head than any hostel.
  4. Travel low season: April–June rates drop across the coast and parks.
  5. Self-cater: shop at local markets and cook.

Sample budget weekend (per person, group of 4, citizens)

Naivasha, 2 nights: shared cottage KSh 3,000 + Hell's Gate entry + bike hire ~KSh 1,500 + matatu/fuel share KSh 1,000 + food KSh 2,000 ≈ under KSh 8,000 all-in.
