Kenya rewards the self-drive traveller: good highways between major towns, dramatic scenery and attractions strung along every route. Here are the road trips worth planning, with realistic distances and costs.

1. The Rift Valley circuit (3–5 days)

Nairobi → Naivasha → Nakuru → Bogoria → back. About 400–500 km round trip. Hell's Gate and Lake Naivasha on day one, Lake Nakuru's rhinos on day two, and Lake Bogoria's hot springs and flamingos as the wild card. Entirely doable in a saloon car in dry weather. Fuel estimate: KSh 8,000–12,000 for a small car.

2. Nairobi to the coast (4–7 days)

Nairobi → Tsavo East/West → Mombasa/Diani → SGR or drive back. About 500 km one way on the A109. Break the drive with a night in Tsavo — red elephants at Aruba Dam or Mzima Springs in Tsavo West — then roll on to the beach. Many travellers drive down and put the car on the SGR back (or vice versa).

3. The Mara run (3–4 days)

Nairobi → Narok → Maasai Mara → back. About 270 km each way, 5–6 hours with the rough final section. A 4x4 is strongly recommended. Combine with a night in Narok or a stop at Lake Naivasha on the return. Plan the Mara portion with our Mara guide.

4. The northern frontier (5–7 days)

Nairobi → Nanyuki → Isiolo → Samburu → (optionally Marsabit). The A2 is tarmac to Isiolo and beyond. Mount Kenya views, Ol Pejeta, then the dramatic drop into the northern drylands for Samburu's special wildlife. Add a Mount Kenya trek at the start if you have time.

5. The southern circuit (4–6 days)

Nairobi → Amboseli → Chyulu Hills → Tsavo West → back via Emali. Elephants under Kilimanjaro (see the Amboseli guide), lava flows and Mzima Springs. A 4x4 is essential for sections of this route.

Costs to budget

  • Fuel: a small car averages 12–15 km/l; at current pump prices, budget roughly KSh 2–3 per km per vehicle.
  • Park fees: often the biggest line item — citizen rates with ID save enormously. See the safari cost breakdown.
  • Accommodation: mix camping with cottages to control costs.
  • Tolls and incidentals: the Nairobi Expressway and some park gates are cashless — carry a card and mobile money.

Road-trip rules of thumb

  1. Start early; avoid driving at night (livestock, unlit vehicles, speed bumps).
  2. Carry water, a spare tyre in good condition and a physical map or offline maps — signal drops in parks.
  3. Fuel up in major towns; stations thin out in the north.
  4. Check weather: some routes (Mara, Chyulu) become difficult after rain.
