The honest answer to "how much does a Kenyan safari cost?" is: anywhere from about KSh 15,000 per person for a budget camping weekend to well over KSh 150,000 per person per night at a top-end lodge. Here is where the money actually goes.

1. Park and reserve fees

Park entry is usually the single biggest daily cost, and it depends heavily on your residency status. Kenyan citizens and East African residents pay a fraction of the non-resident rate.

  • Maasai Mara (Narok County): non-resident fees rose sharply in 2024, reaching around USD 200 per adult per day in peak season and about USD 100 in the low season; citizen rates are a small fraction of that. Fees are set by the county, not KWS.
  • KWS parks (Amboseli, Tsavo, Lake Nakuru, Nairobi): premium parks charge non-residents roughly USD 60–100+ per adult per day, with citizens paying in the low thousands of shillings. See our Nairobi National Park guide and Lake Nakuru guide for park-specific detail.
  • Private conservancies (Ol Pejeta, the Mara conservancies) charge their own daily fees, often bundled with accommodation.

All figures are estimates — verify current fees on kws.go.ke or the relevant county/conservancy site before budgeting.

2. Accommodation

  • Camping: KWS public campsites and private sites from roughly KSh 1,500–3,000 per person per night. Our camping guide lists options.
  • Budget lodges and tented camps: roughly KSh 8,000–20,000 per person per night.
  • Mid-range lodges: KSh 20,000–50,000 per person per night, usually full board.
  • Luxury camps: KSh 60,000 and far beyond, typically all-inclusive with game drives.

3. Transport

  • Self-drive: the cheapest flexible option. A saloon car handles Nairobi, Nakuru and Naivasha parks; for the Mara and Amboseli a 4x4 is strongly recommended. Car hire runs from about KSh 6,000–15,000 per day depending on the vehicle.
  • Tour van with driver-guide: commonly KSh 15,000–25,000 per day for the vehicle, split across passengers.
  • Safari flights: Wilson Airport to the Mara or Amboseli saves a full day of driving but adds roughly KSh 20,000–40,000 return per person.

4. Sample budgets (per person, 2 nights)

Style Park fees Stay Transport Rough total
Budget camping (citizen, self-drive, group of 4) KSh 2,000–4,000 KSh 4,000 KSh 4,000 KSh 10,000–15,000
Mid-range lodge (citizen, tour van) KSh 4,000–8,000 KSh 30,000 KSh 8,000 KSh 40,000–50,000
Non-resident mid-range Mara trip USD 200–400 USD 300–500 USD 150+ USD 700–1,200

How to spend less

  1. Travel in the low season (April–June): accommodation rates drop and the Mara fee is lower.
  2. Go as a group of four to six and split vehicle costs.
  3. Use citizen/resident rates — carry ID.
  4. Mix one premium park with cheaper attractions rather than stacking premium parks.
